In Baghdad, insurgents opened fire on U.S. soldiers guarding a weapons cache, killing one soldier and wounding two, the military said. Elsewhere, a Marine was killed by enemy fire in Anbar province, the western Iraqi province where the turbulent cities of Ramadi and Fallujah are located.

The deaths brought the U.S. toll to 153 since April 1 - including 15 in May. At least 755 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

A daily look at U.S. military deaths in Iraq

As of Monday, May 3, 755 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 548 died as a result of hostile action and 203 died of non-hostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 611 U.S. soldiers have died 437 as a result of hostile action and 174 of non-hostile causes, according to the military's numbers.


The latest deaths reported by U.S. Central Command:

A soldier providing security at a weapons cache was killed Monday by hostile fire south of Baghdad.

Five Navy sailors and one Army soldier were killed Sunday in an indirect fire attack on a military installation in Iraq's Anbar province.

A Marine was killed Monday in Anbar province while conducting security and stability operations.


The latest identifications reported by the Defense Department:

Marine Cpl. Scott M. Vincent, 21, Bokoshe, Okla.; killed April 30 in hostile action in Iraq's Anbar province; assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force; Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Cpl. Joshua S. Wilfong, 22, Walker, W.Va.; killed April 30 in hostile action in Anbar province; assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force; Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Department of Defense has identified the following US service members killed recently.

Staff Sergeant Edward W. Carmen, 27, of McKeesport, Pa., on April 17 in Baghdad in a tank accident. Assigned to Second Battalion, 12th Armored Regiment, First Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

Marine Corporal Jason L. Dunham, 22, of Allegany, N.Y.

Marine Corporal Christopher A. Gibson, 23, of Simi Valley, Calif.

Gibson died April 18, and Dunham on April 22 after a clash with insurgents. Both were assigned to the Third Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, First Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Army Sergeant First Class Bradley C. Fox, 34, of Orlando, Fla., on April 20 in Landstuhl, Germany, from combat injuries. Assigned to the First Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, First Armored Division, Friedburg, Germany.

Army Private First Class Shawn C. Edwards, 20, of Bensenville, Ill., on April 23 in Samarra when his vehicle struck a makeshift bomb. Assigned to Army's 121st Signal Battalion, First Infantry Division, Kitzingen, Germany.

Army Staff Sergeant Cory W. Brooks, 32, of Philip, S.D., on April 24 in Baghdad from non-combat related injuries. Assigned to Army National Guard's 153d Engineer Battalion, Wagner, S.D.

Army Captain Arthur L. Felder, 36, of Louisville, Ark.

Army Chief Warrant Officer Patrick W. Kordsmeier, 49, North Little Rock, Ark.

Army Staff Sergeant Billy J. Orton, 41, Humnoke, Ark.

Army Staff Sergeant Stacey C. Brandon, 35, Hazen, Ark.

The four soldiers above died April 24 in Taji when mortar rounds hit their camp. The soldiers were assigned to the Army National Guard's 39th Support Battalion, 39th Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division, Hazen, Ark.

Navy Petty Officer First Class Michael J. Pernaselli, 27, of Monroe, N.Y.,

Navy Petty Officer Second Class Christopher E. Watts, 28, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Third Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal, 24, of Smithtown, N.Y.

The three soldiers above dies April 24 after a waterborne attack. Pernaselli and Watts were assigned to the USS Firebolt, forward deployed to Manama, Bahrain. Bruckenthal was assigned to Tactical Law Enforcement Team South Detachment 403.

Army Specialist Kenneth A. Melton, 30, of West Plains, Mo., on Sunday in Iraq when his convoy was hit with explosive devices and small arms fire. Assigned to the Arkansas Army National Guard, Company B, Third Battalion, 153d Infantry Regiment, 39th Brigade Combat Team, Fordyce, Ark.

Marine Lance Corporal Aaron C. Austin, 21, of Sunray, Texas, on Monday due to hostile fire in Anbar Province. Second Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, First Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Army Staff Sergeant Abraham D. Penamedina, 32, of Los Angeles, on Tuesday in Baghdad from sniper fire. Company B, 20th Engineer Battalion, First Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Army Private First Class Marquis A. Whitaker, 20, of Columbus, Ga., on Tuesday in a vehicle accident. Second Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Polk, La.
